How many words of content should be used on each page? Is there a minimum number of words to make a page viable?

The benefits of having large numbers of pages on a site include the opportunity to use more title tags , and to gain more inbound links for other pages. However, pages which are lacking in content are much more likely to be seen as spam , and any links from them devalued. As with many search engine optimisation strategies, this is a case of achieving a fair balance which is appropriate to your website, and to the users who you are serving.

When creating content, pages are best split where there is a natural break in the text, rather than after a certain number of words. There is no specific minimum number of words needed to make page viable. In the case of the shopping cart site, if rivals are successfully splitting their product database into standalone pages of only 50 words, then it would be a reasonable strategy to try the same thing. For a content driven advice portal, it might be best to focus on making pages which are easy to print (typically upto 350 words).

Using heading tags to split up content within a page is also extremely useful for both user and search engines alike. This is also an excellent opportunity to add keywords - for example a paragraph about

the health benefits of propolis would now have " health benefits of royal jelly " in the section header (H2 tag), and in the paragraph text itself. This creates two perfectly legitimate opportunities to mention the target keyword ( or even 4 if the page has a content menu at the top and anchor jump links).

Whereas before we may have focused on 200 words as a guideline for each page, if a figure must be given as a target, 300 words might now be more appropriate.
