Are large gains in rank still possible through the use of "supatags™" (highly optimised title tags)?

This is becoming less and less easy due to the levels of competition on prominent search terms. A page can even rank well without using a relevant title tag, if it has an excellent range of inbound links - for example, Amazon.com is #1 on Google.com for "books", even though its title tag just says "Amazon.com: Welcome".

In terms of effectiveness per word typed, the title tag still remains the single most important feature on any web page. This is not just because of the importance search engines give it, but also because it is the first thing that potential visitors will see when they are deciding which site to click on. An effective title tag can easily generate twice as many click throughs from any position, compared to a poorly designed one. It is for these reasons that we continue to devote several hours to deciding the best play on words to use for the title tag on each website's home page, and other prominent pages. The title tag should be reviewed quarterly, and compared against:

  1. Rival sites' title tags
  2. Top keyword referals for the site
  3. Top rankings for the site
  4. Wordtracker top word searches
