Search engines are becoming much wiser to popular spamming techniques, such as registering domains with multiple keywords, separated by hyphens. You are likely to be better off using just one or two words in your domain. Widgets.com or customwidgets.com also looks much more professional to the user than www.buy-our-widgets-from-us.com . There are cases where it is better to use more than one domain, especially if you have two distinct product lines - for example ink cartridges and printers. It is not effective to have a single domain for each individual brand or product (e.g. HP-Cartridges.com , etc), especially as the brand owners are becoming increasingly litigious on intellectual property issues. There is no proof that having a very large website (1000 pages or more) has any distinct advantage in terms of stability in the top search 10 results, although having this many pages on a site does provide an obvious boost to page rank . Content should be built to fit the requirements of each site, and spread across additional domains if this is felt to be relevant to the user. The case for trying to reach a critical mass of content is counterbalanced by the diminishing returns of adding hundreds of pages of extra content instead of adding just a handful of high-quality in bound links.
