Is there any advantage in rewriting similar content, or even in placing small sections from other pages (for example to have an index page which is made up of introductory paragraphs taken from other pages). Should there be any concerns with syndicating articles, or issuing press releases containing quotes which may be repeated around a range of websites?

Duplicate content is frowned on because it was used blatantly by spammers. However this is entirely different to situations where you are using quotes from other pages, or even relatively large chunks of text using server-side includes. As long as each page is independent in its own right (and this might mean that at least half of the content is total unique to that page), there should be no problem with having similar pages, or with making small sections of content available to other websites.

If these other websites are linking back to the original article, then this can be a major advantage.
